Managing Moving into University Accommodation
Moving into university accommodation can feel exciting and overwhelming, especially if it is your first time living away from home.
Plan ahead by checking your accommodation provider’s arrival information, including your move-in date, time slot, key collection point and any parking arrangements.
Make a packing list that covers essentials such as bedding, towels, toiletries, clothes, kitchen basics, chargers and important documents, but avoid bringing too much as student rooms are often compact.
Label boxes clearly and keep valuables, identification and tenancy paperwork with you rather than in the removal van or a shared car.
Once you arrive, inspect your room and shared areas, take dated photos of any existing damage and report concerns promptly to the accommodation team; this can help protect your deposit later. Introduce yourself to flatmates, discuss practical matters such as cleaning, bin collection, food storage and noise early on, and remember that it may take a little time to settle in. If you are feeling stressed, homesick or unsure about anything, speak to your university’s accommodation office, student support service or resident adviser—they are there to help you feel safe, supported and at home.
