Surviveing doctors, dentists and phone calls

Starting university often means managing tasks independently, such as making and attending appointments. This can feel stressful and overstimulating, particularly when there are many unfamiliar details to navigate. I know I find it challenging; even a single phone call can leave me mentally drained for the rest of the day, needing time and space to recover afterwards.

It is okay to feel this way. Give yourself time to recover and to prepare mentally beforehand. It can also help to write a rough script of what you would like to say during an appointment or phone call.

Another important consideration is learning to ask for support before you reach burnout. Universities often have wellbeing teams, disability services, academic advisers, and counselling support that can help you navigate practical tasks or arrange reasonable adjustments. Explaining your needs to someone new can feel daunting, but writing down what you want to say, taking a trusted person with you where possible, or contacting services by email can make the process feel more manageable.
